A Universal Kitchen: The Seven Principles of Universal Design
If you are interested in Universal Design for your kitchen renovation, it would help you to know the “Seven Principles of Universal Design” that were originally developed by the Center for Universal Design at North Carolina State University’s College of Design.
1. Equitable Use. This means that the design is not only marketable but useful to people with diverse abilities.
2. Flexibility in Use. The design will be able to accommodates a wide range of individual preferences and abilities. Example: Appliances that allow both right-hand and left-hand use.
3. Simple and Intuitive. Regardless of the user’s experience, concentration level or language skills the use of the design is easy to comprehend.
4. Perceptible Information. The user’s ambient conditions or the user’s sensory abilities, should not effect the design communicating the necessary information effectively to the user. Example: Those who have impaired vision can also use the appliance.
5. Tolerance for Error. The design minimizes hazards and the adverse consequences of accidental or unintended actions. Example: Appliances that have safety features like child locks on cabinets.
6. Low Physical Effort. The design can be used both efficiently and comfortably with a minimum of fatigue. Example: Controls that are activated with minimal pressure.
7. Size and Space for Approach and Use. Regardless of the user’s body size, posture or mobility the correct size and space are provided for approach, reach, manipulation, and use.
