Functional Galley Style Kitchen Design
Contrary to the popular opinion that galley style kitchens are outdated, there are actually many functional and attractive galley style kitchens being built today. The small family unit or couple that dines in the dining area and does not use a kitchen table is the typical galley style kitchen proprietor. The galley layout is optimal for the kitchen occupied by one or two cooks working at a time, taking advantage of the narrow work triangle to efficiently prepare food.
Rebekah Zaveloff has organized an interesting collection of galley kitchen photos in her houzz.com article entitled, “Kitchen Layouts: A Vote for the Good Old Galley”. The author defines the galley kitchen as follows, “The super-efficient pattern of working left to right and right to left between sink and range is what I think of when I think “galley kitchen.”
There are a variety of contemporary galley style kitchen layouts, including the following traditional three:
1. Two long parallel counter and cabinet arrangements up against full height walls;
2. One long row of counter and wall mounted cabinets against a full height wall, parallel to a row of lower cabinets and counter;
3. Two long rows of free standing lower cabinets and a counter.
